privacy policy

last updated october 25, 2026

feather drive is a mac app that shows your google drive as a disk in finder. this policy explains what data the app touches, where it goes, and what we never do with it. the short version: your files and your google sign-in go directly between your devices and google. we don't run a server that receives them, and we can't see them.

who we are

feather drive is a small independent app. “we” and “us” mean the feather drive maintainers. you can reach us at privacy@featherdrive.app.

the google data we access, and why

when you sign in with google, feather drive asks for these permissions (oauth scopes):

  • openid and email: to show which google account is connected, in the menu bar and in settings.
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file: to create a “Feather Drive” folder in your google drive and to read, write, rename, move, share and delete the files inside it that feather drive created or that you opened with featherdrive.

the drive.file permission does not let feather drive see, list or open any other file in your google drive. your existing documents, photos and folders stay out of reach.

we use this access only to provide the features you see in the app: showing your feather drive files in finder, opening them on demand, uploading files you add, keeping folders offline when you ask, moving deleted files to a 30-day trash, and creating share links when you ask for them.

where your data goes

  • your files travel directly between your mac (or your browser, for the web app) and google's servers. no feather drive server receives, stores or relays them.
  • your google tokens are stored in the macOS keychain on your mac. they are never sent to us.
  • file metadata (names, sizes, folder structure) and a capped cache of recently read file pieces are kept locally on your mac so finder can work. you can clear the cache in settings.
  • encryption keys, if you turn on encryption, are kept in your keychain and in the recovery key you save. we never receive them. google stores only encrypted bytes.

share links

when you create a share link, feather drive makes that item readable by anyone with the link on google drive. for encrypted files, the decryption key is placed in the part of the link after #, which browsers never send to any server.

google api services user data policy

feather drive's use and transfer to any other app of information received from google apis will adhere to the google api services user data policy, including the limited use requirements.

specifically, data obtained through google apis is:

  • used only to provide and improve the user-facing features of feather drive described above;
  • not transferred to anyone else, except as needed to provide those features, to comply with the law, or as part of a merger or acquisition with your notice;
  • not used or transferred for serving ads, including retargeting or personalised advertising;
  • not used to determine credit-worthiness or for lending;
  • not read by humans, unless you give us explicit permission for a specific file (for example, to debug a problem you reported), it is needed for security or to comply with the law, or the data is aggregated and anonymised.

google user data is not used to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models.

the website

this site counts page views and download clicks with a cookie-less analytics tool. it does not use cookies, does not track you across sites, and does not collect personal data. the download button points to our github releases page, which is governed by github's privacy policy.

purchases

payments are handled by razorpay; your card or upi details go to them, never to us, under razorpay's privacy policy. we store only your email address and your license key (plus the razorpay payment and order ids, so we can look up a purchase if you need help). when you activate the app, your mac sends the license key, a random device id and your mac's name, so we can count it toward the 3-mac limit. we use your email only to send your key and answer you.

anonymous usage stats in the app

the mac app sends anonymous usage events to posthog so we can see what works: things like the app opening, which onboarding page someone stops on, how many days it's used, uploads finishing (with a rough size range like "1–10 gb"), and trial and license milestones. each mac is identified by a random-looking hash of its hardware id, not by your name or email. we never send file names, file contents, folder names, your google account, or anything from your drive. you can turn this off any time in settings → general → share anonymous usage stats.

crash reports and feedback

the app does not send analytics or telemetry. if you choose “send feedback”, the message and anything you attach go to us by email, and we use them only to answer you and fix the problem.

removing your data

  • sign out in feather drive settings to delete your tokens and local cache from your mac.
  • revoke feather drive's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
  • your files stay in the “Feather Drive” folder of your google drive until you delete them there.

since we don't hold your data, there is nothing on our side to delete. if you have emailed us, ask and we will delete that correspondence.

children

feather drive is not directed at children under 13, and you must meet google's minimum age to use a google account.

changes

if this policy changes, we will update the date above and describe the change in the changelog. we will never expand how google user data is used without asking for your consent.
